Happy Victory Day!

This year, on May 9, we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945).

Leningrad (the name of St. Petersburg from 1924 to 1991) is a hero city, because despite the almost 900-day blockade and siege of the city by the Nazis, it was able to withstand and continue its heroic resistance.

Fierce battles on the outskirts of Leningrad began on July 10, 1941. The enemy had almost 2.5 times as many soldiers, 10 times as many planes, 1.2 times as many tanks and almost 6 times as many mortars. On September 8, 1941, the Nazis managed to capture Shlisselburg and thus take control of the source of the Neva River. As a result, Leningrad was "cut off from the Mainland". The Nazis planned to starve the city into surrender. From that moment, the tragic story of the blockade of the city began, which lasted until January 1944. More than 650,000 residents became victims.

Our hotel is located 2 minutes from the Hero Cities Park, which has preserved memorial pillboxes since the Great Patriotic War. In 1941-1944, the second line of defense of the city was held here. The pillboxes could withstand fire from tank and anti-tank guns, any small arms. Also in the park there is a Church of St. George the Victorious. This temple was built in honor of the feat of Russian soldiers in the Great Patriotic War.

A majestic monument dedicated to the heroic defenders of Leningrad during the Great Patriotic War and the Siege is located 10 minutes from the hotel. 26 bronze sculptures of the defenders of Leningrad are mounted on high granite pylons. The sculptural groups face the former front line, the Pulkovo Heights. A granite obelisk 48 meters high forms the main axis of the monument. Granite for the obelisk was mined near Vyborg. The construction took 236 granite blocks stacked in 40 tiers. The height of each tier is 1.2 meters. The weight of the structure is 1600 tons. In 1978, an underground Memorial Hall was opened in the complex. There is a documentary exhibition here, from which you can learn about the defense and the siege of Leningrad.

This year, on May 9, a military parade on the Palace Square will open the holiday in St. Petersburg. Torches will also be lit on the Rostral Columns (they will burn from 9:00 to 12:00 and 19:00 to 23:00), and at noon a solemn howitzer salvo will be fired at the Peter and Paul Fortress. Traditionally, Victory Day will end with a fireworks display.

In honor of Victory Day, you will see the "Immortal Regiment" of the Domina Pulkovo Hotel in our lobby. There are photographs of great ancestors who went through the war on a long table. These are both well-known heroes and relatives of our employees. And in the restaurant "Dunay" on the 1st floor, a set of "Frontline" awaits you. The lobby bar will have unobtrusive wartime compositions, and the country's First Channel will be on the big screen.
